Worcester 4000: A Heating Engineers Review vs Which? Review

I read a review about the Worcester 4000 which was published in June 2021, 3 weeks after this new boiler model was launched. This, I thought, was far too early to review a new boiler and one queries the motives of such articles.

Which (the consumer review site) always rate Worcester boilers the best boiler, and has done so for several years running.

This is either that Worcester boilers are really in a class of their own and no other boiler manufacturer comes close and no one can even simulate the same boiler: or something else?

There is no magic ingredient with boilers, you can see what is in it, everyone can who understands them. There is no secret sauce.

Strange then, right?

I am a subscriber to Which and I always see Worcester boilers advertising in all of their publications. It’s no surprise that this advertising costs a substantial sum of money and Worcester boilers must be one of Which’s best customer’s, this is plain to see, not my opinion.

A lot of boiler manufacturer’s do not appear in their advertising features at all, never have. They simply don’t have the marketing budget that Worcester do. I have asked some of them!

Strangely, these other boiler manufacturer’s appear either at, or very near the bottom of their reviews when boiler comparisons are published.

As an engineer I know some of these boilers are at least equal to, or in my view, better than Worcester, so why are they at the bottom? I have worked for two of the largest boiler repair companies and have worked on lots! As an unbiased installer, I have fitted most too. I know what’s a good boiler and what’s not by now.

So, on the Which website, they have recently published an article named “Best Buy Boilers”.

18 out of the first 20 boilers are all Worcester Bosch boilers, and out of a total of 36 boilers reviewed, Worcester are on the list 29 times and only one other manufacturer, 7 times. So is this a balanced review when only 2 boiler manuafcturer’s appear and one has over 80% of all of those reviews themselves?

So this got me thinking, who else is paying Which to appear in their magazines and publications on a very regular and prominent basis?

Of the many forums I read and active in, I have collected data from lots of engineers now that undoubtedly puts the Worcester 4000 as a boiler with lots of quality issues, the videos and images are all online for us all to see. We all see Worcester not responding quickly to these issues, as we believe they have been overrun with these quality problems. I am sure they will get on top of these issues in the near future, but there is no mention to these problems anywhere online?

But Which rate this as the best and most reliable boiler?

Which also state that they collect reviews from Engineers that helps them determine the results of their reviews. This is the Engineers Score and Engineers Recommendation.

So the next question I have been asking in several forums is if any of these engineers have ever been asked to provide a review on any of these 36 boilers and as the 4000 was only launched in May, you would have thought I would find some, wouldn’t you? I couldn’t find any..
